‘Leave it at the Door’: Night Out at the USO Brings Military Families Together Without Electronics
Video by Chad Stewart and Eric Brandner
In the hyperconnected world we live in, screens are everywhere. They’re in our homes, cars, airports, restaurants and pockets. You’re looking at a screen right now.
Sometimes it feels like there’s no way to escape the endless cycle of email, text messages, videos and social media. But USO Fort Riley is offering military families a fun way to disconnect. Family Game Night: Unplugged invites parents and kids over for an evening of food, fun and games without any electronic interruptions.
Tablets, phones and other devices are left at the door and families choose their favorites from a wide selection of board games and table sports like billiards, foosball and Ping-Pong. The USO provides dinner and a place for families to spend quality time together.
“I like it because it gets people out of their normal habits of telephones [and] electronics,” Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Steve Thomas said. “Now they can spend time hanging out with the family, enjoying each other, instead of electronics everywhere.”
You can send a message of support and thanks directly to service members via the USO’s Campaign to Connect. Your messages will appear on screens at USO locations around the world.
Every day, America’s service members selflessly put their lives on the line to keep us safe and free. Please take a moment to let our troops know how much we appreciate their service and sacrifice.
