While the number of women serving in the military—and their roles while serving—were limited until recent years, their contributions were indeed recognized. Many women who served in the United States’ early conflicts performed their duties under hazardous conditions and received medals for their heroic actions.

The Fight for the Vietnam Women's Memorial
Diane Carlson Evans' vision to place a women’s memorial on the National Mall came after attending the Vietnam Veterans Memorial dedication in 1982. She came face-to-face with Vietnam for the first time since returning home in 1969, and there was no turning back.
