Operation Hardwood was created in by the USO in 2005 to boost morale and bring a touch of home to those in uniform. The USO has a long tradition of bringing sports figures and sports-related events to troops overseas,“Operation Hardwood” has deployed more than 35 NCAA basketball coaches and sports personalities to Kuwait and Japan.

We’re With Brett: A Father Staying Close to His Kids Throughout Deployment via the USO and Their Family’s Love of Reading
Meet Brett: a father, an avid reader and a soldier. This is his first deployment since he and his wife have had children, and it's been difficult to stay in touch with his family while in Kuwait. But through the USO, he has been able to connect with his children through their shared joy of books, making the distance and time apart feel a little less difficult.
