“This Life Shows Me I Can Be Anything I Want to Be”: An Essay from a Military Child

As part of the 2026 USO Military Kids Creative Showcase, we asked military kids one question: “What does being a military kid mean to you?” In her own words, Eleanor, age 10, answers what it means to her.

By Eleanor H., Age 10

What I love about being a military child is that I get to see a lot of states and meet a lot of new people when we move. I have never known anything different. I come from a long line of family members in the Marines and other branches. Even though it is hard to say goodbye to friends and homes that we have lived in, I am nervous and scared of a new place, homes, and making new friends. I am so proud of myself and who I have become, knowing when I do these hard things.

It can also be hard when Dad is on deployment. Our longest one so far was 7 months. I am so happy when he comes back and we get to hug him again. I love being a military child. I love my dad and nothing will ever change that. I’m proud of him doing what he does, and that makes me proud of who I am, in and out. This life shows me I can be anything I want to be. I think one of my favorite things has been able to pin him at his promotion. This is such a fun life, and that is why I love being a military child.
