Once you’ve purchased your voucher, you’ll be given a receipt and a credit will be issued in the name of the person you are gifting the voucher to, which they can then redeem when purchasing their USO Florida specialty license plate. Please note that they must be a Florida resident and do not have to present the voucher to redeem the credit, just proper identification (i.e., Florida driver’s license or ID card).

1. Does purchasing a voucher mean I am required to redeem it for the specialty plate? No, purchasing a pre-sale voucher does not obligate you to redeem it for the specialty plate. The voucher simply reserves your option to get the plate once it becomes available.
2. What is a pre-sale license plate voucher? A pre-sale license plate voucher is a reservation for a new specialty license plate that has been approved but not yet manufactured. Purchasing a voucher indicates your commitment to obtaining the specialty plate once it becomes available.
3. Can I purchase a voucher as a gift for someone else? Yes, you can purchase a pre-sale voucher as a gift.
4. What happens if the plate never goes into production? How do I get a refund? If the specialty plate does not meet the required 3,000 voucher sales within the designated 24-month period (which may be extended by an additional 24 months under certain conditions), it will not be manufactured. In such cases, you have the option to apply the voucher’s annual use fee toward a different specialty license plate or request a refund for that fee. To apply for a refund, you must complete Form HSMV 83363
5. How will I know when the specialty plate becomes available? Once the required number of vouchers is sold and the plate is manufactured, you will be notified by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV). You can then pick up your plate at your local tax collector’s office or tag agency.
6. Does purchasing a voucher mean I have to replace my current plates with the specialty plate? Purchasing a voucher reserves the specialty plate for you but does not obligate you to replace your current plate immediately. Once the specialty plate is available, you can choose to replace your existing plate with the new specialty plate either at the time of your registration renewal or as an on-demand replacement.
7. Will I receive a physical voucher after purchase? No, physical vouchers are not issued. The voucher is electronically attached to your driver record in Florida’s registration system and can be redeemed once the plates are produced.
8. What if I want to keep my current license plate number or personalization? If you wish to retain your current license plate number or have a personalized plate, you will need to request personalization when the specialty plate becomes available.
9. Are pre-sale vouchers refundable or transferable? Pre-sale vouchers are non-transferable. Refunds are only available if the plate fails to meet the minimum pre-sale requirements within the designated period. In such cases, you can apply the voucher toward a different specialty plate or request a refund for the specialty license plate fee only.
10. I’ve Bought a voucher. Should I renew my registration? In most cases, you should renew your existing registration and wait for the new plates to become available. If you purchase a voucher, it may be a year or more before the plate meets its voucher goal and is manufactured. Don’t wait to renew your registration during this time. Once manufactured, you will receive a letter from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) with instructions on how to exchange your current plate for your newly approved specialty license plate.
