Volunteering with the USO

There are countless ways volunteers support the USO, but they are all unified in their dedication to our service members and their families. Whether it’s helping at a special event, greeting and cheering at homecomings, working the front desk or providing a listening ear, our volunteers are the reason service members know they can count on the USO.

FAQs

Why should I become a USO Volunteer?

If you are passionate about supporting America’s service members in a real, tangible way, volunteering at the USO is the path for you. The USO has been the nation’s leading military support organization since 1941, serving the people who serve in the U.S. military and their families in locations all around the world, every day of the year.

USO volunteers have a unique opportunity to assist in delivering programs and services to America’s service members by keeping them connected to family, home and country, throughout their service to the nation.

How do I become a USO volunteer?

Find your local USO center and select “Volunteer” to complete the application for that location. The onboarding process to become a volunteer varies from location to location.

What does a USO volunteer do?

The primary role of a volunteer is to welcome and serve our service members and their families, and to make them feel at home at our USO locations. Some common duties include greeting and checking-in guests, assisting with center activities and programs, offering food and beverages, maintaining tidiness in the center and supporting staff members as needed. For more information about what a USO volunteer does, contact a staff member at your local center.

Are there volunteer opportunities close to me?

There are more than 250 USO locations throughout the Africa, Europe, Indo Pacific, Middle East and United States, where volunteers can dedicate their time and efforts. Find your nearest USO center by searching our map. If you do not see a USO center near you, please email [email protected].

If you do not find a USO location in your area, you can get involved with our mission through the many other ways to support.

Can my company/organization/group volunteer together?

Each USO location has unique needs and handles groups of volunteers a little differently. To learn more about group volunteer opportunities in your area, please fill out this form and a USO staff member from that center will reach out to you.

I’m under 18, may I volunteer?

Many of our volunteer opportunities are for individuals 18 years old and up. Volunteer opportunities for minors between the ages of 15-17 vary by location. Please find your nearest USO center by searching our map and starting the application process.

How do I volunteer overseas?

If you are located overseas and are interested in volunteering, you can find a local USO center in your area. Please note that the USO is unable to relocate volunteers. We only accept volunteer applications from individuals currently living within the region.

I’ve moved and want to continue to volunteer. How do I do that?

If you have moved and want to continue volunteering with the USO, please fill out a volunteer transfer request or contact your previous center to initiate a transfer. Please note that you will be asked to log into your USO volunteer account.

Upholding the USO’s core values and mission is a crucial part of serving as a USO volunteer. You can view the USO volunteer policies in the USO Volunteer Handbook.
