The USO will hold its biannual USO Care Package Service Project event Wednesday on Capitol Hill to express America’s gratitude to those who currently serve. The event will produce 2,000 USO Care Packages for troops, assembled by Congressional representatives, their staffs and volunteers. The project also celebrates the USO's five-year partnership with Sesame Street.
The event precedes the annual Sesame Street/USO Experience for Military Families tour, which commences on May 29 at Alaska’s Eielson Air Force Base. (Additional tour dates roll out as the tour rolls along but the Sesame Street gang is slated to visit 42 installations in eight countries over the next five months.)
“It is a privilege and an honor to say thank you to our troops and their families 365 days a year,” said USO President and CEO Sloan Gibson. “Our partnership with Sesame Street is one of the many ways the USO does this for our loved ones and we are thrilled to be celebrating five years of friendship. Working together we expand our reach and support in a very powerful and meaningful way for those who need us the most.”
“Sesame Street has so much admiration and respect for our military families, we feel privileged to partner with our friends at the USO and be a part of this special event,” said H. Melvin Ming, President and CEO, Sesame Workshop. “This is a great way to show our continued support to our servicemen and women and to celebrate five years of bringing our resources and the Sesame Street/USO Experience to Military Families at installations around the world.”
Since 2008, the Sesame Street/USO Experience for Military Families tour has taken its message to more than 368,000 troops and military families and performed 631 shows on 145 military installations in 33 states and 11 countries. It is an extension of Sesame Street’s military families initiative.
