Life is full of ups and downs and on the Sesame Street/USO Experience for Military Families, we get to meet Katie, a military child who is going through one of those down times. Luckily, she has some caring friends to help her see the sunny side of the new challenges that lie ahead for her. And lucky for us, Katie climbed online to talk with us about her experiences.
Q. Being on the move all the time as a military child can be tough. Making new friends, going to new schools. What can you tell kids who go through similar experiences about how to deal with these challenges?
Katie: I want them to know that just because you have to move doesn’t mean you have to stop being friends. There are lots of ways to stay in touch and it is exciting to make new friends, too! They should also know that there are lots of military kids and families going through the same things. Just like me!
Q. What are some of the benefits of living in new locations?
Katie: You get to make new friends and try new things. Like learning the games kids play in your new town. Staying in touch with old friends is fun, too! I like writing letters to friends and it's just as fun to receive letters from friends!
Q. Traveling with such funny companions has to be really cool. What can you tell us about some of the other characters like Elmo, Cookie Monster and Grover?
Katie: It is so much fun to sing and dance with my friends! They are also great listeners who let me know it is okay to talk about how I am feeling. I always feel better after I talk to my friends.
Q. What kinds of things have you learned from the military children you have met around the world?
Katie: I have learned that all of the military children and their families are so brave and resilient. I also learned that talking about what I was feeling with family and friends made me feel a lot better.
Q. This is your third tour with the Sesame Street characters. What are you looking forward to most in 2013?
Katie: I am so excited to see the smiles on the faces of all my fellow military friends! I have learned that talking about your feelings really helps you feel better. I hope to show other kids that it’s okay to talk about how you feel.
