Newsweek has profiled the USO and USO entertainer Jon Stewart as part of its latest issue on newsstands today, touching on such issues as the changing focus and mission of the USO since its inception.
The crux of the article is capsulated with Newsweek’s Lois Romano’s early line: “It’s fair to say this is not your grandfather’s USO.” The piece retraces the organization’s early roots and hallmarks like Bob Hope, Betty Grable and the Andrews Sisters and how the USO has moved nimbly to accommodate the needs of the today’s military, its families and our wounded warriors.
The issue also profiles Stewart, noted pundit and host of the popular Comedy Central late night program "The Daily Show" and how his opinion on America's foreign policy decisions had been reinforced after his numerous visits to stateside military hospitals. The article also presents a vivid account of Stewart’s visit with the troops deployed in Southwest Asia last summer. In it, a very humbled Stewart reflects upon his trip with the heartfelt insights that accentuate the comedian’s sharp, observational intellect and his deep appreciation for our nation’s servicemen and women.
