Mary Nelson Adams
(Representing USO Stateside Affiliates)

For more than six years, Mary Nelson Adams has volunteered at the USO Council of Georgia’s southeastern locations. Known as “the never miss gal,” she never misses a chance to serve the troops. The widow of a military officer, Mary understands the challenges facing our men and women in uniform, and knows the difficulty of being separated from loved ones.
Ask any Savannah citizen who Mary Nelson Adams is and they’ll say, “she is the USO.” Day or night, holiday or weekend, good weather or bad, Mary brings her special brand of southern hospitality to the USO centers at the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport, Hunter Army Airfield and Fort Stewart. Through her quest to recruit volunteers in the Savannah area, the USO has become one of the most sought-after volunteer organizations in southeast Georgia, bringing together the community to enrich the lives of thousands of service members and their families.
Recently, Mary’s service was recognized when she was selected for President Bush’s “Call to Freedom Award.” Upon receiving the award, Mary humbly attributed the honor to all who support the USO in southeast Georgia. She truly loves and takes pride in her work as a USO volunteer. As NBC’s Martin Savidge put it, “You realize Mary Adams [thinks] every kid in camouflage is hers.”
