The fourth annual TellUSO survey of troops and their families asked for feedback on USO programs and services. In 2012, there were more than 16,000 surveys completed.

93% of all troops and their families surveyed agree that the USO:

Every day, USO staff and volunteers make a difference for troops and their families. Troops and families were “Very Satisfied” with:

USO Facts

  • More than 160 locations serving troops and families worldwide
  • USO Centers were visited nearly 9 million times by troops and their families in 2012
  • More than 40 major programs supporting troops and their families and thousands of programs and events coordinated at USO centers worldwide
  • The USO meets the Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance Standards for Charitable Accountability
  • 86% of USO’s total 2012 expenses go to program services
  • Fewer than 600 employees and more than 27,000 volunteers worldwide
  • The USO received the National Medal of Arts Award from President Barack Obama in 2012 and is the only military support organization to receive the award

2012 Highlights

Deployed Troops

  • Provided 28 million minutes of free phone calls home from the front lines
  • Delivered 327 tons of USO2GO materials to troops in remote areas

Military Families

  • Recorded 43,000 United Through Reading® bedtime stories for kids of deployed troops
  • Entertained more than 120,000 families through the Sesame Street/USO Experience for Military Families tour

Warrior and Family Care Programs

  • Supported 35,000 troops and family members through 29 USO Warrior and Family Care Programs
  • Opened the USO Warrior and Family Center at Fort Belvoir for wounded, ill and injured troops

Families of the Fallen

  • Assisted 3,000 family members traveling to Dover Air Force Base for the dignified transfer of their loved ones
  • Delivered more than 2,400 TAPS Military Survivor Resource Kits to military families

USO Centers

  • Performed 1.35 million hours of service by 27,000 dedicated volunteers
  • Supported 9 centers in Afghanistan that were visited 170,000 times per month

USO Events and Entertainment

  • Produced more than 650 events that supported more than 344,000 troops and families
  • Brought 91 celebrity entertainers on 87 tours to 24 countries, 13 states and 15 combat zones
