Country music star Blake Shelton helped kick off a new partnership between jcpenney and the USO on July 6 with a sold-out concert at the Watertown Fairgrounds Arena in Watertown, N.Y.
The popular department store jcpenney has created a new philanthropic arm named jcp cares and one of its first donations was a $1 million gift to the USO. jcp cares also pledges to donate $1 (up to $50,000 total) for each customer that checks into a jcpenney store using foursquare from July 23-31.
Three hundred complimentary concert tickets were donated for troops and their families by jcpenney and the event also provided a setting for the check ceremony. Shelton, known also for his popular turn as a judge on the NBC singing competition “The Voice”, serves as the jcp cares ambassador.
"Supporting the USO is second nature to me," Shelton said. "My dad was a Korean War veteran. My brother was a veteran of the Army. It's a charity that's near and dear to my heart."
President of jcp cares and Vice President of Philanthropy at jcpenney Miki Woodard (pictured far left, with Senior Vice President of Development Kelli Selly) said the new philanthropy harkens back to jcpenney’s founding principles.
"As a company founded on the Golden Rule, jcpenney has a strong legacy of giving back. Through jcp cares, we'll be able to work with our customers to address some of the most pressing issues facing our communities today. Whether it's improving education, supporting our troops or making sure no child goes hungry, working together, we can become a powerful force for good."
And jcpenney’s dedication dovetails with the USO’s mission to lift the spirits of our troops and their families around the world.
"Like jcpenney, the USO has a strong commitment to building community through our centers, dedicated staff and volunteers,” said USO president and CEO Sloan Gibson. “Last year alone, the USO delivered goodness to over 3.6 million troops and their families at our USO Centers across the country. We are honored to be jcpenney's premier charity partner as it officially launches its new charitable giving program this month. Without the support of the American people and companies like jcpenney, the USO couldn't be here today to lift the spirits of those who sacrifice so much for our country."
